The Key To Accomplishing Goals is creating benchmarks

Often, accomplishing certain goals can seem too tough.

One of the strategies that I use in my life to accomplish goals is I try to make a plan, and break the goal into pieces.

Right? So let’s say I have a goal to have $36,000 in my savings account as soon as possible.

First, I’ll evaluate my financial situation and what I can afford yearly based on my salary to get to that amount in my savings account.

Let’s say I can put aside $300/month based on my salary and my expenses.

This means I can save $3600/a year, which means I can get to my goal in 10 years.

I think a lot of people just have the mindset, “oh, I’ll just try to save as much as I can each year and hope 10 years now I’ll have $36,000”. If you don’t take the time to evaluate your financial situation and just decide to wing and let’s say in this situation I made up you ended up only saving $200/month because of it, it’ll take you 15 years to get to that same $36,000. It’ll take you 5 more years because you didn’t decide to really dig in the numbers and create actionable goals.

Creating accountability with your goals and having an actionable plan in place is important to accomplishing a goal.

Obviously, not every goal can be broken down to this black and white level.

Wanting to be a Chief Operating Officer of your company in 10 years is not as simple. Right? There’s not always such a clear, cut path.

But, even with goals that aren’t as black and white, you can create benchmarks.

You can break your organization’s existing structure and say in order for me to get to my goal, I should be a Project Manager in 4 years, I should be a Director of Operations in 7 years and after 3 years in this role, I should become COO in 10 years.

Whatever your goal is, set certain benchmarks for yourself at certain time points and then try to execute on that plan.
